Greetings!
Today I would like to talk about the Golden Elixir or Golden Milk.
What is Golden Milk? The drink is made of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamon, and black pepper. It’s called golden because of its color like the sun. All the ingredients of the Golden Elixir are very ancient herbs and spices that are used in a lot of countries but especially in Ayurveda – an ancient Indian Medicine.
One of the main active ingredients in turmeric. Also, it’s the main ingredient that gives that orangy-yellow radiant color to Golden Elixir. Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine.
Originally ginger is native to Asia countries, such as China, India, and Japan. It is known to be used as medicine and with food. Ginger gives a great spicy flavor to desserts, savory dishes, and drink.
It is a spice that is coming from Middle Eastern countries. And it’s very well known to be used as a medicine and with foods. Cardamom contains vitamins and minerals, as well as some fiber.
One of the yummiest spices. This spice you can find in so many cuisines, from desserts, savory dishes to drinks.
Note: There are two types of cinnamon Cassia and Ceylon (the real cinnamon). The Cassia variety may cause problems in large doses due to the coumarin content. Ceylon (the “real” cinnamon) is much better, and studies show that it’s much lower in coumarin than the Cassia variety. On the market, we usually have cinnamon Cassia variety.
This spice is on everyone’s kitchen shelf, commonly used worldwide. The peppercorns are dried berries from the vine Piper nigrum. This spice adds an earthy kick and sharpness. It has spicy, hot heat as chili peppers. But behind this culinary spice, there is a whole list of benefits. It is very well known in Ayurveda.
For thousands of years, people have used the roots and fruits of ashwagandha for medicinal purposes. The herb is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. Ashwagandha is very common in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India. I use ashwagandha root in Golden Milk before going to sleep. It’s full of adaptogens.
On the market, you have a bunch of different types of golden milk mix. I use Gaia Golden Milk that has already ashwagandha root powder in it. All ingredients are organic and well balanced. I tried it with many types of non-dairy milk and it tastes great or you can make your own Golden Milk at home.
One of the ingredients that I didn’t mention before was non-dairy milk. Traditionally, golden milk was made of raw unpasteurized milk. I personally stay away from dairy but everyone is different and there is no judgment in it. You can use regular milk, commercial non-dairy milk (possible free of carrageenan) but the best is homemade nut milk.
Add all ingredients and non-dairy milk in a pot. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 5 to 7 min on a very low heat. Adjust the flavor with more ingredients. Then pour in mugs. Enjoy!
